Expert in AI and Data Law, Carole Piovesan is named co-chair of Advisory Council

July 21, Ottawa// Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today the launch of a nation-wide mobile app, COVID Alert. Designed to help Canadians stay on top of their exposure to COVID-10, the innovative solution will help meet the unprecedented challenge of the pandemic, the PM explained during a press conference.

To ensure that the app meets the highest standards of health, technology and privacy outcomes, the Government has set up an advisory council made up of diverse experts. INQ Data Law is proud to share that their co-founder, Carole Piovesan, has been appointed co-chair of that COVID-19 Exposure Notification App Advisory Council.

With expertise in privacy, cyber readiness, data governance and artificial intelligence, Piovesan brings a wealth of experience at the intersection of technology and law. She is the co-chair of the data governance working group for the Data Governance Standardization Collaborative at the Standards Council of Canada and member of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence. And she was previously appointed by the Government of Canada to serve as a digital leader for the 2018 national Data and Digital Transformation consultations.

Helping to trace potentially infected people, the app will notify Ontarians should someone they know be diagnosed with COVID-19. Though only available in Ontario currently, Trudeau is hopeful other provinces will be signing on soon. “If enough people sign up, we can help prevent future outbreaks of COVID-19 in Canada,” he said.
